Bindle Bottle Announces Recall for Lead Exposure in Products, Halts Manufacturing

Bindle Bottle LLC is recalling its eponymous Bindle Bottles after it was discovered that they may contain an area of exposed lead on the bottle’s bottom storage compartment. The bottle comes with a piece on the bottom that can unscrew to store snacks or other little food items. That means that any unpackaged food in there could have been exposed to lead, creating a health risk for users.

According to the FDA, the bottles were distributed on the company’s website, Amazon, in retail stores, and also through promotional products distributors.

The bottle comes in four sizes, all of which are included in the recall: 32 oz., 24 oz., 20 oz., and 13 oz. The company is also recalling the 24 oz. Bindle Bottle that comes as part of its Puppy Pack, which includes a carrying strap and collapsible water bowl for a dog.

The FDA reported that no illnesses have been reported to date due to lead exposure. The products were initially tested after reports form Lead Safe Mama and Consumer Reports revealed a “small, 0.4″ diameter soldering dot in the bottom storage compartment contained lead,” according to the FDA. Further testing showed that there should have been a cover or barrier over that soldering dot.

As a result of the recall and manufacturing error, production of Bindle Bottles have been suspended and “will be overhauled going forward” to rectify the issue.

Customers can fill out a form at Bindle Bottle’s website to receive an at-home repair kit.

Bindle Bottle also specified that there is no issue with the water bottle portion itself, so customers are safe to continue using it as a storage device for liquids. It’s just the storage compartment. And, once the repair piece is implemented, it’s safe for use again.

“Bindle Bottle knows that you have placed your trust in us and we take our customers’ safety seriously,” the company wrote on its site. “We sincerely apologize to you for the inconvenience of this voluntary recall. At Bindle Bottle, we pride ourselves on placing safety first and we will continue to stand behind our product line.”
